Printing

Fumes and Odors

Overview

Printing applications produce written texts on paper and are used widely by a number of different industries, businesses and organizations across the globe. Commercial printing industries print on a grand scale and manufacture a vast range of products. Newspapers, magazines, labels, business and hospital materials, catalogs and booklets are all made by commercial printers. But printing is also done on a much smaller scale in most offices, businesses, hospitals and even in many residential homes. It’s an application every one of us use at some point in our daily lives.

Health Hazards of Printing

While printers are an indispensable tool many of us rely on each day, they also have a negative impact on indoor air
quality (IAQ). Printing produces a number of harmful chemicals such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that
pollute indoor air and can adversely affect our health. VOCs contain toxic compounds including gasses and ultrafine particles (UFPs) such as
soot, dust and sulfur dioxide. The quantity of these toxins can be significant as a typical printer emits somewhere
between 10 to 70 times the UFPs found in ambient air.
